Recycling Problems

Normally, it would be safe to assume the contents within the Student Center’s bottle and can containers would be recycled, but English major Sarah Green said this isn’t the case.

“I’ve seen [Student Center custodians] mixing recyclables with trash two or three times,” said Green. “I’ve only noticed it in the Student Center, but not in the academic halls.”

“I don’t think the average student would care, honestly,” Green said. “Students don’t noticed it because of schoolwork and stress.”

Recycling can be a lot of work, but it’s frustrating to see the process get interrupted, she said.

“If they’re not going to [recycle], then [the Student Center] shouldn’t put out the recycling bins,” said Green.

Relay for Life raises $43,000

The 3rd annual Relay for Life took place over the weekend in the Moore Fieldhouse track.
Over $43,000 was raised for cancer research.

Three years ago, senior math major Kim Peterson brought Relay for Life to Southern’s campus—and as she prepares to graduate, this weekend’s past event could not be more important to her.

“This one has more meaning to me because my friend died of cancer in October,” she said.

Unlike other years, Peterson started her own team and was able to raise $370.

Southern mourns loss of former VP

Just before this past Christmas, Dean of Student Affairs Richard Farricielli called David Pedersen, the former vice president for student and university affairs, and told him he had to come see the university’s new Michael J. Adanti Student Center.

Pedersen, who worked at Southern from 1983 to 2004, played a vital role in the creation and planning of the new student center, which opened in Spring 2005.

But Pederson told Farricielli he couldn’t drive or walk up to the building because of his medical problems, including diabetes. 

“So we met him with a scooter at his car and he spent a good amount of time here,” said Farricielli. “He really got a chance to see the building. He was very happy with it.”

A resident adviser and resident connection like no other

One was a resident adviser; the other one a resident—but this wasn’t the usual RA relationship—this was a relationship where a resident and RA were able to find friendship and comfort through something they shared: being diagnosed and dealing with Multiple Sclerosis.

Antoinette Wright stepped out of her car. Not more than three seconds passed before she saw the dogs. Two of them. They tore out of the bushes that line the front yard of her Rockview Terrace home, a short distance from the SCSU campus, and lunged at her.

Southern mourns tragic loss of student

She was a dedicated student, an aspiring teacher and now, Southern students and faculty are mourning her loss.

Twenty-three year old Jennifer McLeod, of Seymour, was killed in a four-car accident on Route 8 in Seymour on Friday, April 20. McLeod, who also had a twin sister, was a junior education major at Southern.

Education Professor Nancy Marano taught McLeod in a children’s literature and literacy class.

“She was a model for our students here,” she said. “She was always on time, always was in class and did her work consistently.”

Education Professor Kay Corbett had McLeod as a student this semester in a Child Development class.

“She was very quiet, and very conscientious,” Corbett said. “She was always able to relate what she was doing with the children in the field to what she was learning in class.”

Future changes for food services

Students who complain about the food service at Southern—whether it’s the prices, services, or just the food in general—may have a chance to relax: Chartwells, the food company that services Southern, has its contract ending in June 2008, meaning a new food service may be hired to cater the Southern campus.

To make the decision easier, Vice President for Student and University Affairs Ron Herron went to the students first. He, along with David Porter of Porter Consulting food service and planning, developed a food survey that was sent by e-mail to all students and staff to hear their opinions on what they aren’t happy with and what they would like to see at the dining halls. 634 students responded to the survey, as well as 193 faculty and staff.

After the survey was compiled, the university will write a Request for Proposal, detailing what the Southern campus wants and what prices they expect. Then, different food companies, including Chartwells, have the opportunity to bid on the request.

Jail N' Bail a $14,000 success

The SCSU Police Department and Beta Mu Sigma members took a chance this year and did a fundraiser like none Southern has ever held in the past. 

Officer Tom Madera said the goal of Jail ‘N’ Bail was to raise $2,500 since it was a new experience for the campus and, therefore, they didn’t know what to expect—they raised over $14,000.

Jail ‘N’ Bail, which has been done on other campuses in the past, enabled students or faculty issue an arrest warrant for anyone on campus, for $5.  After the warrant was issued, the campus police and a member of Beta Mu Sigma picked up the individual, handcuffed him or her and then escorted the person to the mock-jail, which was donated by the Crescent Players.
