Visitor provokes students

On a sunny, 80-degree weather day, as students enjoyed the barbecue on the campus academic quad, many were surprised by one man who had a sign attached to him that read Sinners: God is Judging You.

Among the list of “sinners,” were ‘homos and lesbos, porno freaks, Roman Catholics, baby-killing women, Mormons, Muslims, unsubmissive wives, unloving husbands, liars, racists, drunkens and fornicators.’

The sign caused so much anger and raised so many questions from students who surrounded the man, that one student, Adrienne Gurge, who kept shouting “God hates people that hate” to him, walked up to him and spit directly into his face.

Election results: Parrott, Diaz winners

Mark Parrott and Sam Diaz III had separate victories after last week’s election.

The online ballots were counted and two winners were announced last Friday: Mark Parrott is the new Student Trustee on the CSU Board of Trustees and Sam Diaz III is the class of 2008 Senior Class President.

Student’s death a result of drug intoxication

Christopher Sawyer’s sudden death in his Schwartz Hall dorm room on Sept. 27, 2006 sent shockwaves through the university community. Amid the grief, a single question remained: Why did he die?

His death has remained an untold story on campus until now.

Sawyer, a 20-year-old junior chemistry major and Shelton native, died of accidental methadone intoxication, according to his death certificate, which is being reported here for the first time.

Police Log - April 18th-April 24th

Harassment: On April 22 at 4:13 p.m., a student went to Southern police stating her ex-boyfriend, a North Campus resident, was following her, calling her and made an obscene Myspace.com page about her.

Theft Greater-Miscellaneous: On April 21, at 4:07, a blue Honda and red truck stole the Lot 9 sign by Brownell Hall.

Shoplifting-Theft Greater: On April 19, at 6:33, stolen books were sold back to the Student Center bookstore by three females.

Driving while Intoxicated-Alcohol: On April 19, 12:55 a.m., 43-year old John W. Black Jr. was charged with DWI, driving while drinking and possession of marijuana on Fitch Street by Wintergreen Avenue.

Future plans set for empty spaces in Student Center

The area on the street level of the Adanti Student Center, next to the bookstore, is set to be filled by Aug. 15.

A full-service bank will be coming this fall to one of the two empty retail slots at the Michael J. Adanti Student Center. The bank will be a branch of a local credit union that will eventually employ students and expand hours to accommodate students and faculty.

To Whom It May Concern:

In response to an article recently printed in the Southern News that addressed the issue of Fireplace Lounge furniture being destroyed by students, we are upset and frustrated. We understand that the Fireplace Lounge is meant to be the representation of the new Student Center, but when a single group of students is being placed under blame in an area that is open to the public for use by all of the university, it’s simply disgraceful.

Media is hooked on violence

The one medium that does tend to overplay violent acts is television. Whenever a tragedy or violent act happens, there is so much speculation on news talk shows as to what happened and why. The show usually features a couple of  “experts” who are more than willing to offer their opinions as to why and how things unfold. In the case of extreme situations, like the Oklahoma City bombing, the Columbine High School massacre and the Virginia Tech shootings, the news media dragged their coverage out to the point where it became numbing.
